晚年身體太差，被BBC強迫退休。

飾演Master的演員好友Roger Deldago車禍身亡、

Jo演員Katy Manning表示是因為過去兩年來的背痛因素讓他想離開；

直到新任製作人John Nathan-Turner接手，辭呈才因他希望有個新風格而獲批准。
不久後以"才剛離開不久"為由，拒絕回歸20周年紀念特輯。
